During the Open Video Conference held in New York, June 19-20, I interviewed Matt Mason, author, The Pirate’s Dilemma: How Youth Culture is Reinventing Capitalism. I read Mason’s book and absolutely LOVED it. It was different. It was as Seth Godin would say a Purple Cow.
It stood out because of its honesty, inclusion and diverse examples. Mason, who is from England, clearly understands the music industry and shared his personal experiences from being in pirate radio to grime to hip hop and punk. He talks about how pirates have always forced rogue industries to regulate when the giants refused to self -correct.
As we sat outside in the courtyard of the New York University Law School, Mason was personable and engaging. I asked him why other industries had not copied the very successful iTunes model. In other words, why aren’t they going small to make a lot of money, a la Chris Anderson’s The Long Tail.
